Sumatra is the sixth largest island in the world (approximately 470,000 km²) and is the largest island of Indonesia. The interior is dominated by two geographical regions: the Barisan Mountains in the west, swampy plains in the east, and the backbone of the island is the Barisan mountains chain.
Volcanic activity of this region has endowed it with fertile land and beautiful scenery, like that found around Lake Toba. Sumatra has also an incredible variety of flora including Rafflesia (world’s largest flower). The island wildlife consists of Sumatran Tiger, Rhinoceros, Elephant and the famous Orangutan which lives exclusive in Sumatra and Borneo.
